Duluth native Dave Johnson’s first sauna build was a custom sauna that he built for his family cabin in the 1990s.  At that time, Dave was gaining valuable woodworking experience doing home building and remodeling for a small, independent builder.

It turns out that people loved the sauna.  It immediately became a place of rest and connection for the entire family.

The process kindled something in Dave, too.  The joy that came from creating a space that became so special to so many people was a feeling that never left.  Dave began to dream of building custom saunas as a profession, but that dream was deferred while Dave attended to the responsibility that came along with his growing family.

Now, with his kids grown, the time has finally come for Dave to pursue his dream of bringing that same magical experience of sauna to others, and Fire and Ice was born.  Dave’s mission is simple: to pour a lifetime of woodworking knowledge into creating heirloom-grade custom saunas, so that people across the Northland can enjoy the same restfulness, reinvigoration, and authentic connection that his first sauna brought to his own family many years ago.
